Almost 5 years in to this parenting thing I have firmly decided that it doesn't matter why the baby/toddler/preschooler wakes up. Loss of sleep is loss of sleep. So, while I may have my ideas about what "acceptable" wake ups may be, the truth is that it doesn't really matter so much to the child if they are awake for an "acceptable" reason or not. Fortunately for us, Killian is a pretty good night sleeper. He may wake up to eat but he goes back to sleep easily and doesn't wake up for comfort a million times or for paci calls (hooray for no paci and no thumbsucking!).
Apparently, however, he does wake up a lot more than his sisters did to practice new skills. Yesterday I watched him on the monitor while he took 3 naps - each shorter than 20 minutes. He would be sound asleep and then start trying to crawl. Crawling would wake him up and he would then sit up and play with his mirror, little blanket, and crib rail toy. I left him in his room all three times for an hour hoping he would go to back to sleep. He just played. When bedtime came last night I hoped it meant he would sleep well because he had been so busy during the day. I was wrong. He didn't wake to eat last night but he did wake screaming once because he was sitting. Not sure why it required screaming since he can lay back down now and during the day he was perfectly happy to be sitting. Another time I was awakened by very hard crying. When I got in there he was rocking back and forth up on all 4s. Poor guy. He's trying so hard! Maybe he'll get this crawling thing figured out in a few days and then we'll get sleep for a few weeks before he starts trying to walk. Or maybe not. Yesterday in his crib he was grabbing the sides and lifting his bottom up so we may be working on pulling up very soon...
